It seems to be getting more attention in some circles than others, but last week New Mexico football player Deshon Marmon was arrested for…sagging pants. That’s right, Marmon was boarding a plane and was asked to pull his pants up. Upon his refusal he was asked to leave the plane. Recently, in Hampton Roads, VA, there was an event held to recognize the academic success of many of the area’s young black males. In reality, it’s easy to see why our young men opt for the path of super stardom via rap lyrics or ball handling skills because those are the things we applaud – regularly. Well I applaud your efforts Hampton Roads.

You would think in a day and age when our country seems to be progressive enough to elect an African American in the highest office in the land that our society as a whole could tolerate something as trivial as a hip hop artist being invited to the White House for a poetry event. But you would be wrong to think this. Our country still permeates with some of the same ignorant and small minded ideals it was founded on some 200 years later, i.e. racism. First Lady Michelle Obama invited hip hop artist Common to a White House poetry event to the dismay of several high profile conservatives. Karl Rove went so far as to call Common a thug and Sarah Palin jumped on the bandwagon, tweeting the Daily Caller story with a comment “Oh, lovely White House” — the virtual equivalent of rolling her eyes. Lets forget the fact that Hip Hop music in general should be embraced as an art form and genre of music with many different facets and not viewed in the one narrow-minded view that presents it as nothing but an excuse for misogeny and violent imagery. But more specifically there’s the issue of judging Common on one poem and not his entire body of work. But in an attempt to stir controversy concervatives dug and dug, and found an example of what they’re looking for, in the form of a poem called “A Letter To The Law”: It shouldn’t take a genius to explain what’s going on in this poem: It is what the title suggests, a “letter” to the source of moral authority written from the perspective of inner city black youths who feel that the police don’t protect them, that the media loves to blow up and then tear down their community’s celebrities and that the government has been acting more gangsta — in terms of their invasion/occupation of Iraq — than they could ever hope.
The irony of this is if you are familiar with who Common is you already know what type of artist he is. He’s not what you would consider to be a “gangsta rapper” or particularly prone to any of hip-hop’s legendary excesses. In fact, it was these excesses — “poppin glocks servin rocks and hittin switches” — that Common famously criticized in perhaps his most famous song, “I Used To Love H.E.R.”. And if you want to get even more ironic it wasn’t that long ago that George H. W. Bush invited the late “Eazy-E” to the White House! Surely the conservatives have bigger fish to fry. Like REALLY?!
